Gerund merupakan kata kerja bentuk ing (verb + ing) yang berfungsi sebagai kata benda (noun). Beberapa penggunaan Gerund adalah sebagai berikut:
1.Sebagai subjek atau objek kalimat.
Contoh : Walking is a good exercise. (walking = subject). I like walking in the morning (walking = object).
Gerund sebagai objek dipakai sesudah kata – kata : like ,dislike, love, hate, enjoy, mind, can’t stand.
2.Sesudah preposition
Contoh :
She is good at painting
Are you interested in writing poems?
I am fond of cooking.
3.Sesudah verb + preposition
succeed in : He succeeded in getting a new job.
think about : We think about moving to the village.
dream of : He always dreams of being a film star.
apologise for : She apologised for bothering me.
look forward to : I am looking forward to hearing from you.
be/get used to : He is used to living in a big city.
4.Sesudah verb +object + preposition
I thank you for coming.
Forgive me for not replying soon

5.Sesudah frasa seperti :
• It is no use/good…
Contoh : It is no use complaining. It is no good boasting oneself.
• It is a waste of time/money…
Contoh : It is a waste of time talking about that topic. It is a waste of money smoking.
• It is (not) worth…
Contoh :
It is not worth taking a taxi to go to the post-office. It is near from here.
• ‘have (no) difficulty ….
Contoh :
We had difficulty getting the visa. She has no difficulty finishing the work..
• ‘spend/waste (time).. ‘
We spent hours finding your address.
• ‘can’t help… ‘ = tidak dapat menahan…
Contoh :
I can’t help laughing to hear his jokes. I can’t help falling in love with you judul lagu).
