Prompt:
What do you think will be a big area of research over the next 20 years? (maximum 2000 characters)
Response:
As technology quickly develops, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more prevalent in our everyday lives. AI was initially created to perform simple tasks that required human intelligence, but it has now grown into a super machine with human capabilities.
The impact of AI can be seen everywhere. For example, our phone’s facial recognition feature helps prevent unwanted access and even adapts to subtle changes in the user’s appearance. Social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram use AI to show relevant content first and to personalise our feed.
Businesses can also benefit from the use of AI by targeting the best possible consumers based on the data collected. Meanwhile, customers can interact with chat bots on a company’s website in real-time, as if they were communicating with a real employee. Jobs that require repetitive work can now be automated.
But just like any technology, it could do more harm than good if used without careful thought. As a society, we should be aware of the negative uses of AI and aim to minimise them.
AI could recommend more products that may be bad for customers, such as fast food, simply for corporate gain. Politicians could use AI to manipulate votes, which could result in an unfair win and a more divided society. AI also encourages users to become glued to social media hence drain their productive time.
I believe that the explosion of AI in the past decade will lead to a lot of research on its ethical aspect. More specifically, how to design an algorithm that improves our lives while at the same time minimising potential harm, such as addiction, bias and discrimination, and unjust outcomes.
In the next two decades, I expect to see research on ethical AI blossom. I want to take part in this initiative by researching algorithms that can choose what’s best for us or society as a whole. I will use my knowledge of mathematics to develop an efficient, yet ethical, AI.
Mathematics is one of the oldest subjects in the history of human civilisation, but I believe that it is also a versatile tool that adapts with the progress of our society. Mathematics has been, and will continue to be, a solution to our problems.
